Dear New York State Senator,

Dear New York Assembly Member

I strongly urge you to include the provisions of S.4262/A.5376 in the upcoming state budget. The NYPD is suffering from a severe recruitment and retention crisis, and they simply cannot keep up with the unprecedented exodus of its members.

This legislation would entice experienced Detectives, Sergeants and Lieutenants to serve with the NYPD for 25 years or more, which will begin to stabilize the Department’s workforce and help keep our communities safe. The current staffing crisis is jeopardizing public safety in New York City and the future of our entire state. New York City is the economic engine that powers our state, but it cannot thrive without safe communities and safe subways.

NYPD Retention Statistics:

Year Officers Hired Retirements Resignations Staffing Change
2022 2,053 2,404 1,237 -1,588
2023 2,375 1,992 939 -556
2024 2,645 2,112 839 -306
2025 1,110 611 (YTD) 117 (YTD)

*as of March 1, 2025

  • Service Retirements are up 300% in January 2025.
  • 1,103 Officers Retired or Resigned in just the last three months.
  • 3,132 Officers Resigned in the last 3 Years.
  • 3,943 Officers are currently eligible to retire.

New York City does not currently have enough police officers to meet its public safety needs. The NYPD is down nearly 7,000 officers from its peak headcount and that\'s the lowest staffing level we’ve seen in the last 30 years.

We need bold legislative action to help the NYPD retain New York’s Finest of all ranks. Helping New York City invest in its experienced officers will benefit every New Yorker.

We'll send this email to your elected officials listed.
